    Hotels up for Montreal Worldcon
    Public Service announcement:

The hotels are now available for booking for this summer's Worldcon in Montreal. After agonizing, cosmicdolphin and I will be at the Intercontinental. So who else is going or thinking about it?

    question for the techies
    Hey all,

Has anyone done IPSEC from z/OS on a mainframe to a Linux box successfully? (...and if you have, would you be willing to share with me how you did it?)

    Hey Chicagoland-local folks,

Would anyone be interested in playing a Dune game on August 23 or 30th? Dune the Avalon Hill board game, that is. cosmicdolphin and I have been in the mood recently, and while it's a great game, we need exactly 6 players to get the power balance right. With myself and cosmicdolphin in, that leaves us needing 4 more players. Location TBD.

    Anyone interested?

    omega factor
    Making a rare public post:

In case any of my flist hasn't yet bought The Omega Factor, Amazon has it for just under half off for region 1.

It's an excellent series. Well worth the $21 that Amazon wants for it. Go forth and buy.

    vid rec
przed just posted a mindblowingly depressing (but good!) vid for Angel here. You should also check out some of the really funny vids that she's got on her site, such as Gay Bar and Bohemian Like You.

I'm particularly interested to see what people think of Agnus Dei, though, as I betaed this vid for her. My very first.

It's not slash, folks, so safe for all ;-)

(Best, of course, if you've seen the last season of Angel, but not completely necessary. You'll pick up the salient bits from the vid.)

a very quick waffle on betaingCollapse )

    Go take a look.

I assume my friends list has seen this by now, but Sci Fi Channel have *finally* picked up Doctor Who.

See the press release here. Of course, this probably means the scifi channel will butcher it like they do everything else, and of course, the bastards pushed off the DVD release until July 4th this year. Premiere is in March.

Hmmm, think the times writer might be a fan of dr. who? Check out the article.

Not, mind, that *I've* seen it yet, even though I'm absolutely panting to. Damn dr. who addiction.

So, on other notes, am bored. cosmicdolphin had to work today, and I had to drive him into work, as stupid CTA was on holiday hours, and he started at 6am today. Since I had to get up anyway, hit the market when it opened at 6am (having dropped off cosmicdolphin at 5:40am or so.) Have just finished making the filling for potstickers, and am letting it sit to absorb flavor.

Don't want to read stuff today. Read all my candy last week, and now have more intense stuff, but I'm in more of a candy mood (cheap, enagaging, and mindtrash). I could watch stuff on DVD, but what? maybe old who....

or, one of you could decide you are bored too and want to do dim sum or something (hint, hint). Or if you haven't spoken to me in awhile, feel free to call ;-)

In the meanwhile, there is always more TitanColossus, but even that is beginning to pale after *so* *many* *games*.

I wish there was a decent version of Roborally online...or I had a PBEM Call of Cthulhu game or something. My dune game is going well, but like all PBEM, slowly. Am totally still up for gaming IRL (particularly in mood for Dune, Roborally, Betrayal at House on the Hill or similar), so if you've had a hankering and we can get our schedules to mesh (no mean feat, since my average go-to-sleep time is 8pm or 8:30pm at latest) then give me a shout.

*Really* must find a new addiction or a craft. Have been totally at a loss for things to do on my own for awhile now. Just don't seem to enjoy things as much. Foo. Got invited down to my friend T's today, but is waytheheckoutintheburbs, and too much like work ;-) Got invited to a Bollywood thing, but just isn't my thing, and don't want to wreck enjoyment of others.

Oh, worldconners for this year: PR3 has just been mailed out with hotel reservation info in it. Supposedly, hotels open for reservations on 1 Jan. So who is going?

    second part of updates
Ok, so I'm bad about things.

cosmicdolphin posted the list of books we recently purchased during his obscene discount (45%) week in his journal here. I have since read:
    Mage: The Hero DiscoveredCollapse )
    SerenityCollapse )
    DoomCollapse )
    ConstantineCollapse )
    Backstage PassesCollapse )
    Midnight MassCollapse )
Important bits of Necroscope and Other Weird HeroesCollapse )
    Thieves World: Turning PointsCollapse )
Thieves World: Enemies of FortuneCollapse )
My Hotdog Went out Can I Have AnotherCollapse )
    Stay at a LighthouseCollapse )
    ExcavationCollapse )
    Deep FathomCollapse )
    Crossroads: Tales of ValdemarCollapse )
    The Dim Sum CookbooksCollapse )

Of course, these were all the low-hanging fruit of our book purchases (I'm not counting Orientalism, because cosmicdolphin didn't realize that I already have a copy stacked in my academic book boxes somewhere.)

I've been reading the Tanakh on and off, as is appropriate. Next up will probably be the new Myth books by Asprin and Nye, and some of the Templar trash that we got :-)

I've really been enjoying have a *stack* of good new books to go through. Quite enjoyable, and gives me something fun to do in the evenings....particularly when cosmicdolphin is a-gaming. Of course, I've got many many books, and I reread all the time, but there's just something about a new stack.....mmmmmmmmmmmm. Really, really good stuff.

Now if only work would behave. hrmph. Perhaps giant Cthulhu currently sitting in my office can lend a tentacle.....

Just got an early holiday pressie from cosmicdolphin. It's a......Cthulhu Backpack!

I'm *totally* wearing this into work tomorrow. Maybe with my CephaloPod t-shirt.

    Not much new to report.

Have just started in a AH Dune PBEM game, and so far, I'm very impressed with it's setup. So far, it's the only use that I've ever seen for a wiki outside of the Wikipedia. (See the site for the slickness.) I'm playing Bene Gesserit, and I'm very interested to see if it works. Normally, I play with people I know, and can make judgements on their play style and skill before making the Bene Gesserit prediction for victory, and throughout the game I can judge and adjust my play style based around visual and nonverbal clues from the other players. This time, being a PBEM, I'm running "blind", and I wonder if it's going to work.

My first real PBEM. Strange, I know, but I've always preferred IRL gaming. Of course, now that most of the old gaming groups have scattered (sigh) or are otherwise unavailable, I don't have many options. I've been positively *twitching* for a game of Dune, too.

Yesterday was the evil night of much snowfall and concomitant painful driving. I've decided that I'm not really cut out to be a driver, what with the way I get stressed, and really need a chauffeur. Are you listening, cosmicdolphin? :-)

Much, much love to cosmicdolphin who kept me mostly sane during the drive home and to dnereverri, who managed to not freak when I was freaking earlier in the day ;-)

Dual parties have been declared for tomorrow, but I may not go to either, wussing out due to snow. We'll see.

Spent an entertaining day hunting up books to buy, as we need to take advantage of cosmicdolphin working in a bookstore. Fun stuff and good/bad for the collector in me. I mean, do I really need a poker book by philfoglio? Clearly, yes, I do ;-)

    More updating later.

    Oh Great Cthulhu!

I have been an extremely diligent devotee this year.

In August, I recruited [info]niqui as a new cultist (30 points). In May, I legally changed my name to Randolph Carter (-40 points). In March, I made a burnt offering to the Dead Dreamer (100 points). In December, I rammed a ship into you (sorry Cthulhu!) (-1000 points). In February, I bombed a cultist gathering (-100 points). Yesterday, I rescued [info]jovianconsensus from being sacrificed (-200 points).

In short, I have been very bad (-1210 points) and deserve to be sent to sleep with the Deep Ones.

    Your humble and obedient servant,

Submit your own plea to Cthulhu!
